Oil Basics

Oils are most commonly sold in metal tubes and available in two types—artist grade and student grade. Artist-grade oils have high pigment strength with the pigments ground as finely as possible. In this grade there is a series of single pigment colors, as well as more expensive pigments such as Cadmium colors, Cobalt colors and Cerulean Blue, which makes it necessary to have series pricing. In essence, the price of the color will depend on the price of the pigment used to make that color.

The second range of oils is the student-grade colors. These are also called sketching oils. Manufacturers reduce the amount of pigment in the paint and replace it with inert filler such as aluminum hydrate. This results in a lower pigment strength and hence, a less-expensive oil color. Student-grade oils can vary widely in both range and strength of colors. Usually all colors will be priced the same unless the more expensive pigments such as Cadmium, Cobalt and Cerulean are added to the range.
